A package of bond proposals with a dollar sign ranging between $430 million and $450 million may confront voters in the largest school district in El Paso this coming November.
Officials with the El Paso Independent School District, which operates just over 90 individual campuses, are contemplating a ballot question that would address a wide range of deferred maintenance issues, technology updates, and general campus improvements.
More specifically, $175 million would target deferred maintenance projects, with just under $94 million going for heating and cooling system upgrades. Another $25 million would be slated for the renovation of the district’s athletic stadiums.
The bond proposals may be divided up into three separate ballot questions.
For the bond questions to have any chance of success, David Bates, deputy superintendent of the district, told EPISD board members this week, a public outreach effort will have to be made this fall. “We do have to educate,” he remarked.
A bond committee is expected to present a breakdown of the various proposed projects to the full EPISD board of education in early August, which will then be tasked with deciding whether to call for putting the questions on the November ballot.
District voters last approved a bond in 2016: a $668 million question that passed by a 55% to 45% margin.
