The 53-acre Santa Fe estate that was once the home of actor Gene Hackman is now on the market with an asking price of just over $6.2 million.

Located on the northeast side of the city in the 1400 block of Old Sunset Trail, the home was originally built in the mid-1950s and later substantially upgraded and expanded by Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa, who purchased the structure and estate around 35 years ago.

Hackman, a two-time Academy Award winner whose films include the French Connection, The Conversation, and Unforgiven, was found dead in the home nearly a year ago. The actor had suffered from Alzheimer’s.

His wife, whose cause of death was listed as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, was also found dead at the residence and was thought to have died a week before Hackman.

The property is being listed with Sotheby’s International Realty. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, realtor Tara Earley said the tragic deaths of Hackman and Arakawa, may make for a challenging sale.

“We are selling the property on its virtues and all of the positives,” said Earley.

The property, surrounded by trees, includes six bedrooms, library, studio space, a guest house, a swimming pool, and putting green, among other features.

Hackman, who appeared in more than 75 motions pictures, was a well-known presence in Santa Fe and supporter of the local arts.
