An extensive upgrading and expansion of one of the largest shopping malls in metro Denver is expected to see the building of new retail and restaurant space, as well as offices and multifamily luxury housing.
Located at One West Flatiron Crossing Drive in the growing suburban city of Broomfield, the Flatiron Crossing mall was opened to great fanfare in the summer of 2000 and featured an unusual layout that combined an outdoor extension with the indoor portion of the mall.
With nearly 200 stores and more than 1.4 million square feet of retail space, Flatiron Crossing has largely been one of the more consistently successful shopping malls in Colorado and was acquired in 2012 by the Santa Monica-based Macerich Company, an estate investment trust.
In keeping Flatiron Crossing interesting in the competitive world of grand shopping malls, Macerich has announced plans to spend upwards of $240 million to redevelop the property.
According to papers filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Macerich wants to also see construction of a hotel and a parking garage.
Renderings of the redevelopment, which is expected to be done in phases, also show a green gathering space running through the length of the site and surrounded by several multi-story structures.
With eight properties located in Arizona, among more than a dozen other states, Macerich is today the third largest owner and operator of shopping malls in the country.
