The Target retail chain has announced plans to build two new stores in Arizona and Colorado each, as well as four in Texas, all as part of a larger effort to expand its operations across the country.
Altogether, the Minneapolis-based company wants to build 40 new stores in some twenty-one states, adding to a chain that currently includes just under 2,000 locations.
Target’s expansion effort comes as the company has been dealing with a decline in sales that sources say are due to a variety of factors. Company statistics show that Target’s second quarter sales this year were off by nearly 1%, for total revenue of $25.2 billion.
The company’s expansion is also taking on new dimensions, with at least half a dozen stores measuring well over the 125,000 square feet that has long been a Target average.
While specific locations for the most immediate new stores have not been announced, it is known that Arizona will get new Target outlets in Buckeye and Mesa, while Colorado will see new outlets in the cities of Denver and Firestone.
Texas, meanwhile, is slated for five new stores in Dallas, Forney, Fort Worth, Katy, and Little Elm.
The flat figures reported earlier this year by Target have been repeated in its just-released earnings report for the third quarter of this year showing a 1.5% decline in sales for the third quarter of this year over the same time period in 2024.
In a statement, Michael Fiddelke, Target chief executive officer, referenced what he called the “multiple challenges continuing to face our business.”
Fiddelke said the company was “solidifying our merchandising authority, elevating the shopping experience, and further harnessing the power of technology to move at greater pace and consistency, all in support of a return to sustainable growth.”
Of the forty new Target stores planned for construction, 30 are set to go up in the South and West.
