A project proposed by a major taser gun manufacturer that will see the construction of a massive office building, manufacturing center, and some 1,900 residential units in Scottsdale has received an important thumbs up.
Members of the Scottsdale City Council have given their approval to the building of what will be a 250,000-square-foot corporate headquarters for the Axon taser manufacturing company.
Additional projects featured at the 74-acre site: 50,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space, as well as a 435-room hotel.
As proposed, the massive multi-use development will go up on the north side of the city near Arizona State Route Loop 101 and N. Hayden Road but will be somewhat smaller than originally envisioned owing to objections from area residents regarding the project’s scale.
In response to those comments, Axon has sized down the project’s dimensions, reducing what was originally a proposed 400,000-square-foot headquarters, and around 2,600 residential units.
Company structures at the site, meanwhile, have been reduced from five stories to four.
According to public documents, Axon has dedicated just over 200,000 square feet on the site to the City of Scottsdale, “which will be used for constructing any facilities it may require.”
Launched just over 30 years ago as Air Taser Incorporated, the company was rebranded as Axon in 2017 and is now regarded as the largest supplier in the country of taser weapons, body cameras, and a cloud-based digital evidence platform.
The financials behind the project are all on the large size: it is thought that it will cost upwards of $1.3 billion to complete the development on a site that Axon purchased four years ago from the Arizona State Land Department for $49.1 million.
