Work may soon begin on a phase two park upgrade project in El Paso.
State of Texas funding coming in at $1.5 million has been secured for both infrastructure and landscaping work at the El Paso Eastside Regional Recreational Center at 13501 Jason Crandall Drive.
That funding is coming through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission, which altogether has announced grant awards of just under $31 million for some 50 individual park projects across the Lone Star State.
The grants come in three categories: Urban Outdoor Recreation Grants for municipalities with more than 500,000 residents; Non-Urban Outdoor Recreation Grants for city areas with less than 500,000 residents; and Small Community Recreation Grants for towns of less than 20,000 people.
Because El Paso is the largest city in West Texas with a population of nearly 690,000, it is receiving an Urban Outdoor Recreation Grant, which is awarded on a 50/50 reimbursement match basis.
The Eastside Regional Recreation Center project will see the building of new sports courts, native landscaping, and irrigation work.
According to press release from the Parks and Wildlife Commission, the just-announced grants will fund everything from the building of nature trails to splash pads, playgrounds, and kayak launches. Last January the commission awarded $20.6 million in grants for 16 individual park projects.
