Plans have been announced for the construction of a travel center that will go up inside the boundaries of the Taos Pueblo in northern New Mexico.
As envisioned, the center will be built on a mostly vacant site at the northeast corner of U.S. Route 64 and Hail Creek Road.
Members of the Taos Pueblo Tribal Council have recently voted to approve a schematic design for the project.
That design by the Albuquerque-based NCA Architects provides the center, which will also serve as a gas station, with some grocery and fast food restaurant space.
Work is expected to begin on the facility this spring with an anticipated fall opening.
The Taos Pueblo is a Native American community populated with one and two-story adobe structures built some 900 years ago.
The entire pueblo site, with a population of around 4,500 people, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
