A bond oversight committee that is a part of the Tucson Unified School District may soon review a proposal to plan, design, and build a new football field that will belong to the district’s Pueblo High School.
In November of 2023, voters in the district overwhelmingly approved by 59% to 41% a $480 million bond designed to fund repairs and upgrades to existing school buildings, with some $43 million going to improvements in classrooms and learning spaces.
The upgrade aspect of the bond campaign was seen as particularly important given that a majority of the district’s 87 schools are more than 50 years old.
Now officials with the high school, which is located at 3500 South 12th Street, would like to see the creation of a new football field paid for out of the November 2023 bond.
Published reports have indicated that it will cost at least $2 million to build a new artificial turf field. It’s possible that work on the field would come out of the nearly $264 million of the bond that is designated for general repairs and upgrades to existing district facilities.
The new field project would need the approval of both the bond oversight committee as well as the Tucson Unified School District Governing Board.
If the project is approved, work could begin sometime this fall.
An upgrade of the field, which including the installation of a new sprinkler system, was completed in 2011.
