A two-story brick building in Las Vegas, New Mexico that was completed in 1889 is now up for sale.
The structure at 1809 Plaza Street, with an Italianate Style facade, was the property of the brothers Elmer and John Veeder, attorneys who owned the firm Veeder & Veeder. While the brothers resided on the upper levels of the building, the ground floor was mostly known to locals due to the presence of the long-standing Hofmeister’s Grocery Store.
A second adjacent structure, built several years later at 1821 Plaza Street, is part of the package now listed for sale, with an asking price of just under $2 million.
Both structures are graced by their wooden floors, high ceilings, and large windows.
Located in Las Vegas’ Historic Plaza, the structures represent the built environment of the oldest part of the city between the 1830s and early 20th century. The entire plaza has since been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
At the time of the construction of the oldest building, Las Vegas had a population of around 2,300 people and, according to the Las Vegas Gazette, enjoyed a downtown plaza populated with hotels, barber shops, drug stores, and taverns.
The city today, with a current population of around 13,100, has found a new economy based on tourist interest in the estimated 900 or so mostly brick structures populating the Historic Plaza, and their aesthetic value in location filming.
The two Plaza Street properties are being listed by the Duke Realty Group of Las Vegas.
