Even by upscale, luxury Colorado standards, the listing is remarkable: for $78 million a would-be homebuyer can own a 15,000-square-foot, six-story mansion in the town of Vail.
Located at 100 Vail Road, less than half a mile to the south of downtown Vail, the property includes 11 bedrooms, oak floors and solid walnut doors, as well as two elevators and nearly two dozen custom heated ski lockers.
The home was sold for $57.2 million to biotech entrepreneur Kevin Ness, the former chief executive officer of the life science technology company Inscripta, and before that, in 2006, was listed for $21 million.
The largest residential structure in Vail, the home looks out over the Gore Range and additionally includes one indoor pool, two outdoor heated pools, and three spas.
If the $78 million price tag is met for the mansion, it will set a new Vail record, one surpassing the previous $57.2 million for the same property. What clinched the original sale, noted the publication Vail Beaver Creek Magazine, “was not just the superlative duplex, but the allure of living in the heart of Vail Village.”
One of the Colorado’s most popular ski destinations, Vail, with a population of around 5,000 people, has seen its average home price in the last year increase to $1.7 million, up from $866,000 a decade ago.
The Vail Road property is being listed with Compass Real Estate, also of Vail.
