Plans are underway for the construction of a 65-foot-tall cell phone tower that will go up on vacant land near the town of San Pedro, roughly 40 miles to the south of Santa Fe.
The exact address for the project is 101 Via Vasa Colorada.
The project belongs to Verizon, the largest telecommunications wireless carrier in the country, and is designed to improve cell service in a region challenged by dead zones.
In an application to Santa Fe County, the company says the “proposed wireless facility is needed to improve service quality and coverage to the surrounding area for safety and general communication needs.”
The document adds that the tower is particularly essential for providing services for traffic support along New Mexico State Road 14 and New Mexico State Road 344.
The application is currently being reviewed by a hearing officer with the County.
According to industry statistics, Verizon as of late last year had more than 146 million subscribers across a span of 2.6 million square miles.
