Village of Melrose Gets State Funding for City Hall Work

Work may begin later this year on renovation work at a historic one-story City Hall in a small eastern New Mexico town.

Members of the state legislature earlier this year approved up to $250,000 in capital outlay funding for upgrade work to the Melrose City Hall. The building was completed in 1939 as a Works Progress Administration project under the New Deal.

The structure, which was built at a cost of around $20,300, has a unique exterior design composed of triangular stone pieces and stone quoin corners.

The project is one of nearly twenty capital outlays for Curry County subsequently signed into law by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham with a total value of $17.3 million.

The Governor also approved $650,000 in funding for a football field replacement project at the Texico Middle School in the town of Texico; and $500,000 for the renovation of a commercial barn at the site of the Curry County Events Center and Fairgrounds at 1900 E. Brady Avenue in Clovis.

Additional funding, also at $500,000, is going for the building of a new animal shelter in Clovis; with another $250,000 targeting renovations to the Clovis Police Department headquarters at 320 N. Connelly Street.

Located on the state border with Texas, Curry County, unlike other rural counties, has seen its population slowly increase in recent years, with the last Census Bureau count putting the number at more than 48,000.
