A company specializing in limestone, sand, gravel, and ready-mix concrete, among other products, has made plans to build a concrete ready-mix batch plant just to the northeast of Colorado Springs.
The Rapid City, South Dakota-based Pete Lien & Sons wants to build the facility on the vacant northeast corner of Stapleton Road and Judge Orr Road.
The new facility would join a substantially larger network of Lien company operations elsewhere in Colorado, as well as South Dakota and Wyoming.
The company, which was launched in 1944 and incorporated a dozen years later, is one of the largest of its kind in the West. Its assets several years ago were reported as being in excess of $35 million.
Although residents living in the vicinity of the planned batch plant have raised concerns about noise, traffic, and possible pollution issues associated with the new facility, members of the El Paso Planning Commission have voted to approve granting a land variance on the 92-acre site where the project will be built.
The project is now awaiting the approval of the El Paso Board of County Commissioners.
