Work Planned for Busy Avenue in Roswell

Work could begin later this year on the half-mile rehabilitation of a major north-to-south thoroughfare in Roswell, New Mexico.

The road cuts through a largely residential section of the city.

Plans are underway for the removal of around 3 inches of existing asphalt surfacing on North Atkinson Avenue, as well as nine inches of excavation.

The project would then see the building of some 6 inches of new base course, along with some sidewalk replacement and entirely new sidewalk construction along the avenue, which is also known as New Mexico State Road 256.

Some tree removal, needed to clear the way for the new sidewalk construction, will be required, as well as the removal of an existing stone fence.

The rehabilitation of the South Atkinson Avenue was undertaken in 2019 and included the concrete replacement of sidewalks, driveways, curbs, and gutters.

In 2018, the New Mexico Department of Transportation released a transportation construction and rehabilitation plan that included $1.1 million in funding for rehabilitation work on Atkinson Avenue.
