Additional funding for the building of a planned clinical sciences facility on the El Paso campus of Texas Tech Health is moving the long-planned project ever closer to an actual construction date sometime next year.
Members of the Texas Tech University Board of Regents have voted to approve $1.7 million for the project, which will see the construction of a three- or four-story building at the northern side of the campus.
It is thought that altogether the new building, estimated at 352,000 square feet, will cost $186 million to complete.
The regents’ vote additionally gives a green light to $1.1 million in funding for the creation of Steve and Nancy Fox Cancer Care, which will be built within the new clinical sciences facility.
In August, the same regents board gave its unanimous approval to spend $6.3 million to fund the design of the building.
Although the fundraising for both the clinical sciences structure and the cancer center have moved along similar lines, the building of the two are regarded by Texas Tech officials as two separate projects.
According to board of regents’ documents, the new clinical services structure will house treatment space, along with nurse stations, laboratories, medicine storage, clinical supply rooms, and waiting areas.
Planning for the cancer center was significantly spirited in the summer of 2023 by a $25 million donation from Steve Fox, chief executive officer of the El Paso-based car dealership Fox Auto Team.
The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center campus, located at 50001 E. El Paso Drive, was founded in 1969.
